Opis |
Žužemberk lies on both banks of the River Krka, at the intersection of the Ivančna Gorica – črnomelj and Novo Mesto, and Trebnje – Dvor – Kočevje roads. It is the centre of the Suha Krajina region, which spreads from Muljava to Sv. Peter, Brezova Reber and Dobrnič. When talking of Žužemberk, it is impossible not to mention the beauty of the River Krka, which creates some of the most picturesque cascades over the tufa barriers. In the past, crabs, one of the classiest dishes of the Vienna court, abounded in the river. Unfortunately, the end of the 19th century witnessed the pest that killed the whole crab population, which was impossible to replace. Currently barbells, bleaks, trout, and from time to time the Hucho hucho, swim in the Krka, although their number is much smaller than it used to be in the times when baskets were used to extract fish from the river. Visiting Žužemberk and spending a holiday in Suha Krajina, the region by the upper reaches of the Krka, is a good way of escaping the hustle and bustle, smog, crowds, cars and the strains of everyday life. Nature has been generous to this area, which offers limitless possibilities to enrich body and soul. If you like sports activities, take a boat or bike trip, go fishing, hunting or walking, or simply enjoy an unforgettable ride in a horse-drawn carriage. The rich cultural and historical heritage of the area is well worth seeing: Žužemberk castle, the church of St. Nicholas, the remains of the Roman road and of Celtic settlements, the Roman gravestones, the restored furnace at Dvor, the church of St. Agnes, several linden trees that are over a hundred years old, a watermill, the remains of a paper mill and a leather processing plant. Life in the Suha Krajina region differs from that in the more developed areas, but everyone who wants to can pass time differently and will find something for themselves. The local inhabitants are willing to offer help, should you need it. We would like more people to get to know the area and experience some unforgettable moments in Žužemberk, in the Krka valley, by the rumbling cascades, in the beautiful countryside in the mysterious karst region. Time passes differently here in Žužemberk, Suha Krajina. Come and enjoy the Krka and its valley of castles, the peace and quiet, unspoilt countryside, the cultural and historical heritage, and many activities to make the most of your free time. |
