Opis

Veržej is situated on Mursko polje, on the right bank of the Mura. There are vast forests of deciduous trees, which spread from the north, right up to the village. Eastwards, along the edge of the forest, there is a wide area of pastures, which are sprinkled with white daffodils in May. The place lies 183 metres above sea level. It is connected with the regional road to Ljutomer, Gornja Radgona, Murska Sobota and Lendava. Veržej has been a settlement since prehistoric times, which has been proven by the discovery of various artefacts: urns filled with ashes, objects made of bronze, pieces of broken earthenware, which date back to Illyrian times, and a stone disc from the Stone Age. Nowadays, Veržej is an independent municipality with a population of 1,400 inhabitants, and consists of three villages: Veržej, Banovci and Bučani. It covers an area of 12 square kilometres. Particular attention is paid to ecology – Banovci and Veržej have sewage works of their own. Special attention is paid to activities like fire fighting, culture, sports and tourism. Veržej is the largest village on the right bank of the Mura, enriched with many natural and cultural goods, with its famous and unique watermill, and its forest nature trail. It is also known as the birthplace of the composer Slavko Osterc and the prelate and historian Dr. Fran Kovačič. You can visit a beautifully arranged room, in memory of the composer Slavko Osterc, and enjoy the pleasant tourist facilities and good food.
