Opis

Solčavsko can be defined as an area in the extreme north-western part of the Upper Savinjska valley, which is geographically remote and inaccessible. The area was already important in ancient times. The oldest settlements in Potočka zijalka date back to the early Stone Age. In spite of the territory having been settled before the year 1000, the name Solčava (Sulzbach) was first recorded only in 1268. The settlement was supposedly given the name by its founders, the Bavarians, who settled there in the 9th and the 10th centuries. The Slovene name “Solčava” probably derives from the Slovene word “sol” (salt), since salt used to be mined in Robanov kot. The municipality of Solčava is surrounded by the municipalities of Luče, čŒrna na Koroškem, Železna Kapla, Jezersko and Kamnik. Solčava was already a municipality in 1850, and in 1999 the wish of the residents to have an independent municipality again, was fulfilled. Most inhabitants live on mountain farms, which are, considering their size and structure, something special, as their average area is 150 hectares. The beginnings of tourism date far back to the 18th century, when botanists and geologists began visiting the area. Guestrooms, private accommodation and a registry book are known to have existed in 1865. Some years later, they started to build inns in the Logarska valley. That was a good basis for tourism. The increase in tourism in recent years has favourably influenced the economic development of the wider region. The most important advantage of Solčavsko, in comparison with other tourist resorts, is, without a doubt, the well-preserved natural environment with two protected regions of national significance, the regional parks Logarska dolina and Robanov kot. These attract more and more visitors each year. Some natural landmarks include the ancient yew tree, Igla, a periodic spring, the source of the Savinja – the Rinka waterfall, “Ĺ kaf” in Matkov kot, Lipševa vrata on Mount Olševa and Potočka zijalka cave. Let us list some more landmarks, which are of national importance: Golerjev pekel, Macesnikova zijalka, Klemenškov pekel, the source of iron-rich mineral water below Olševa, Markov kot etc. There are four examples of cultural heritage in Solčavsko (the barn in Podolševa village, archaeological finds in Potočka zijalka cave and Robanov kot) which are of great importance for Slovenia, therefore the state takes special care of them. Within this context, the church of Our Lady of the Snows is also important.
