The municipality of Sodražica, which covers an area of 49.5 square kilometres, comprises 23 settlements with a population of 2,160 inhabitants. Most settlements are situated in the lowland area along the Bistrica and its confluents, whereas ten settlements are located at an altitude of between 800 and 900 metres above sea level. Due to the population slowly but steadily diminishing since pre-World War I times, the whole area is classified as being demographically endangered which is typical of high-lying and remote parts. Nowadays people from the region are employed mostly in industry and manufacturing. Farming continues to be a secondary source of income but due to unfavourable climatic conditions and the small size of farms it does not represent an important source of income. Nearly half of the municipal territory is covered by mixed forest, so it is not surprising that a special kind of trade developed in the area, namely manufacturing wooden products. The characteristic name for their produce is “suha roba” (dry ware). This trade has represented an important source of income for centuries. The art of “dry ware” manufacturing passed from generation to generation but unfortunately nowadays there are only few manufacturers left who make the ware exclusively by hand or use only very simple machines in their trade. The majority have switched mostly to mechanical production, which favourably influences income and the employment rate. When talking about Sodražica, it is impossible not to mention some personalities that are of national and some of them also of international importance. Dr. Ivan Prijatelj, literary and cultural historian, Dr. Ivan Lovrenčič, founder of the Slovenian Hunting Association and editor of “Lovec” (The Hunter) and the sculptor France Gorše, are only some of the people who made Sodražica known abroad. These famous men nowadays have successors, especially among musicians and sculptors. The first and the most important role of the new municipality is to halt the negative demographic trends but this can only be done by making the area more interesting and attractive for the younger generation.
