Opis |
The municipality of Ĺ entjernej is situated in the western part of the Krška Ravan region. It stretches to the Gorjanci hills, which border it in the south. In the north, it is skirted by the hills planted with vineyards of the Krško gričevje, in the west it is bordered by the Novo Mesto region and the Rog, while in the east it passes into the Pannonian Plain. The municipality of Ĺ entjernej, founded in 1995, is one of the newly formed municipalities. Due to its favourable climate, the municipality is an agricultural area, its principal branches being farming, stockbreeding and wine production. Ĺ entjernej is known for its market days, organized every second and fourth Saturday in the month and which are attended by over 150 participants who sell their goods and services. The event, which has become traditional, is among the largest of its kind in Slovenia and in Europe. There are a number of relatively well-preserved medieval castles/mansions: Gracarjev turn, Vrhovo and Prežek. The Carthusian monastery Pleterje was founded by Herman II of Celje at the beginning of the 15th century. It is located in a sheltered valley, only three kilometres from Ĺ entjernej. Of the original monastery, the Gothic church, one of the most beautiful buildings in Slovenia, has been preserved. It is open to visitors who can watch a slide show in several languages and become acquainted with life in the monastery. The monastery has helped to preserve several customs, trades and crafts (pottery, smithery, coopery, basketry, beekeeping) which many generations have enjoyed. Various events include “koledovanje” to celebrate Epiphany in January, “pritrkavanje” (change ringing), St. Martin´s Day in November when cider turns into wine, lighting a bonfire on Midsummer´s Eve etc. The municipality is famous for its wine “cviček”, singing, and its symbol - the cockerel, which is also depicted in the municipal coat-of-arms, and known all over the country. Since “cviček” is becoming increasingly popular, a “vinska cesta” (wine road) has been set up. Visitors are invited to follow the road from Novo Mesto to Kostanjevica, much of which traverses the Ĺ entjernej winegrowing hills. The largest event, which takes place in August, is the municipal festival – Jernejevo, lasting 10 days. The region is also famous for horses, which used to be used to tow carts and carriages, but are nowadays bred for riding and as pets. |
