Opis |
The Bela Krajina Pass at Gaber provides the view of the varied “kraški ravnik” of Bela Krajina. The municipality of Semič touches its northern edge, at the foot of Kočevski Rog and the Gorjanci hills, which cut it off in the north. It covers an area of 147 square kilometres, which represents 0.7% of Slovenia. It has a population of 3,876 inhabitants and comprises 47 settlements. Sixty-six percent of the territory is covered with forests, the rest is shallow karst land with sinkholes, pastures, arable land, and vineyards on Semiška gora. From Gaber by the main road you go down to the valley, where the centre of Semič is located. The municipality of Semič with its natural and cultural heritage is the right place for those who long for peace and walks in the countryside far away from the hustle and bustle. The region is nice and peaceful, full of interesting and original customs and events, which liven up what the village has to offer visitors. In the Middle Ages, the region was owned by the Semenič noblemen. Nowadays only the ruins of the Semenič and Smuk castles remain. The remains of villages in the Kočevski Rog forests hide the unusual past, once populated by the Kočevje Germans for more than 600 years. At the local museum in Semič, visitors can become acquainted with a detailed history of the settlement and see a collection, which presents nature conservation in the Bela krajina region. In the past, Semič was an important trading and cultural centre, which is evident from the rich architecture of some buildings in the town. The place is known for good wines, rich cultural heritage, successful entrepreneurs and tradesmen and for the Iskra factory which produces capacitors. |
