Opis |
The municipality of Selnica ob Dravi is part of the Central Drava valley, according to its geographical location and its relief, together with Janževa gora, Spodnja and Zgornja Selnica, and the lowland village črešnjevec ob Dravi, which joined the municipality in 1971. The development of Selnica was influenced by its reliable infrastructure, its proximity to the Drava, and its location close to the main road. The Drava valley, with its specific geographical position, was of political, cultural and economic significance. Selnica is first mentioned in 1093, on the deed of donation, with which the ownership of two farms was given to the Benedictine monastery from St. Paul in the Labot valley. The increase of the population was strongly influenced by the Maribor – Dravograd - Klagenfurt railway along the River Drava, which was built in 1863, but its construction did not diminish the importance of the Drava in terms of transport. The territory of the Drava valley, especially its mountainous section, gained an important position in Slovenia in the wood and trade field. The end of the 19th century witnessed the decrease of stockbreeding and the increase of forestry. That led to a decline in the stability of extended farms. Giving up pasture land and the decrease of stockbreeding, basically point to the decrease in farming. The further shaping of the region was strongly influenced by the glass industry, mining, charcoal-burning and the iron industry. The first hydroelectric power station Fala was built on the River Drava. Selnica is also known for its rich cultural heritage. In 1916, the actor Arnold Tovornik was born there, and people are also proud of the Viltuš manor at Spodnja Selnica. |
