Opis |
The municipality of Mengeš lies in a beautiful pre-Alpine plain below the Kamnik Alps and is skirted by Mengeško polje in the east, and the hills of Gobovica and Dobeno in the west. It comprises the settlements of Mengeš, Loka pri Mengšu, Topole and Dobeno. The municipal centre Mengeš, which is only 15 kilometres from Ljubljana, is an old settlement, as its name was first mentioned in 1154. There are many historical buildings in the town indicating that there is a rich cultural tradition. The most important historical buildings are the remains of the fortified castle at Gobavica, the Stare mansion, the Ravbar mansion, the Jable castle, the three-nave Baroque church of St. Michael, with a Gothic presbytery, the baptistery and the confessional box, designed by our famous architect Jože Plečnik, and the succursal church of Sts Primož and Felicijan at Loka by Mengeš. Mengeš is known for its famous citizens, namely the writer Janez Trdina and the painter Franc Jelovšek, whose frescos adorn several Slovenian churches, were born here. In the past, Mengeš boasted a straw-hat industry and the production of musical instruments. And lately the textile industry and small businesses are on the increase with over 400 small businesses registered. Until 1994, Mengeš was part of the Domžale municipality. But with the local government reform and the residents voting for an independent municipality in the referendum in May 1994, the Mengeš municipality became independent on 1st January 1995. |
