Opis

The municipality of Markovci spreads over the lower part of Ptujsko polje, mainly on the left bank of the River Drava. The territory of the municipality, of the parish of St. Mark and of the Markovci primary school district, is the same. Markovci was first mentioned in 1215. It was a municipality already in 1937, but then known under the name “Sv. Marko niže Ptuja”. Schooling in Markovci began in 1789. Regular lessons have been given since 1810, at first in the building next to the church. The first school building was built in 1840. In 1890, another was built, nowadays known as “the old school”. The latter was replaced by the present building, which was built in 1979. Most people living in Markovci cultivate the land. Some of the inhabitants work in the companies and institutions on the territory of the former municipality of Ptuj, but a large number of people, thanks to their diligence and know-how, have opened their own businesses and workshops. The principal agricultural activities are farming and stockbreeding. Beekeeping is also popular, as in the past there was a lot of buckwheat grown in the area, which was a rich source of honey for the bees to collect. The speciality of the municipality are its “korant” and other authentic masks worn on Shrove Tuesday: “rusa”, “piceki«, »orači«, »vile«, »medvedi«, »kopjaši«, and others. They present themselves at »fašenk« in Markovci and other villages. The original carnival takes place only in the Markovci municipality.
