Opis |
The municipality of Kobarid is situated in the north-western part of Slovenia, where the alpine and the pre-alpine worlds come together. The western border of the municipality is also the border between Slovenia and Italy. The present municipality was founded with the reorganization of local autonomy in 1994, and thus regained its independence after losing it in 1961. Kobarid is a picturesque little town in Gornje Posočje (the Upper Soča region), skirted by high mountains (Krn, Matajur and Stol) and is the administrative centre of the municipality. The area is made even livelier by the rivers Soča and Nadiža which have many tributaries, waterfalls and canyons. The majestic landscape of the Julian Alps attracts visitors who would like to escape the hustle and bustle of the overcrowded towns and cities and find a peaceful retreat for walking and free time activities like fishing, mountaineering, cycling, kayaking, rafting, paragliding, or simply enjoying the beauties of nature. The unique jewel of the area is the River Soča, one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe. “Krasna si, bistra hči planin, brdka v prirodni si lepoti, ko ti prozornih globočin nevihte temne srd ne moti…” (Oh, you majestic mountain lass, nothing your fairness can surpass, when your clear water reflects blue skies, not even dark clouds could disguise…) This is how Simon Gregorčič, a poet and priest from Vrsno depicted the Soča in the 19th century. The beautiful emerald green waters, which attract anglers from all over the world, are home to the Soča trout. Visitors will certainly never forget the impressive mountain peaks, which afford views all the way to the sea. You can choose from a variety of mountain trails, which offer unforgettable scenery and the possibility of mountain bike rides. The remains of the World War I battlefront silently remind you of what is said to have been the greatest armed conflict in a mountainous area in history. The grandchildren of soldiers that fought in these mountains nowadays uncover the scenes of the battles. The events are documented in the award-winning museum in Kobarid (it won a Council of Europe award in 1993), and you can walk along the specially prepared historical trails. The Tonovc castle, with its newly discovered archaeological findings, shows how important the area was in late antiquity. Many other cultural, historical and ethnological sights can also be seen. Excellent restaurants and guesthouses, united in the “Kobariški gastronomski krog” (Kobarid Gourmet Club), attract guests from near and far. A wonderful way to end the day is to spend it in the casino and amusement park at Staro Selo. |
