Opis

The municipality of Ig is situated 10 kilometres from Ljubljana, at the edge of the Ljubljana Marshes, at the northen foot of Krim (1107 m) and Mokrec (1058 m). It consists of the low land of the Ljubljana Marshes and the hilly hinterland with the peaks of Krim, Mokrec and Kurešček. The villages lie at the edge of the Ljubljana Marshes plain, as characteristic roadside settlements on the gravel banks of the River Iška. The municipality of Ig borders five municipalities: Ljubljana, Ĺ kofljica, Velike Lašče, Cerknica and Brezovica. The municipal centre and headquarters is at Ig, where Studenec, a powerful source of the River Ižica, is located. Ig was first mentioned 750 years ago, although the history of the region goes back much further. The lake dwellers lived on the Ljubljana Marshes 6,000 years ago. As well as boats made from tree trunks – “drevaki”, the most interesting artefact found in the area is a black polished earthenware bowl. It is decorated with carvings called “woman´s idol”, depicting a woman wearing a linen dress. It dates back to 2,000 B.C. and was found on the Dežman lake-dwelling site near Ig, in 1876. The times when Romans settled the region have not yet been thoroughly researched, although more than 100 Roman gravestones have been found in the area. These are now built into the walls of Ljubljana cathedral, while some of them are stored in St. Michael´s church at Iška vas. Special attention should be paid to a rock carving from the 1st century A.D., called “Stari dedec” (Old Man), between Staje and Kot, located where an ancient Roman village road used to run. This is one of only a few similar monuments in Europe.
Ig castle, which used to belong to the earls of Speinheim, Engelhaus and later the Auerspergs, is located on Pungart hill. On 21st March 1848, in the year known for its wave of revolutions, the castle was pillaged and burnt down during the Peasant Uprisings by 300 rebellious farmers. The municipal festival is celebrated on this day. Currently the castle houses a female prison.
The area in the Draga valley is known for its seven ponds which were created by building dams on the Draščica and the stream below the village of Dobravica. The area was proclaimed a monument of natural heritage in 1986. It is the habitat of several water and marsh floral species, as well as some rare birds. The crested grebe, which can often be seen there, is depicted in the municipal coat-of-arms.
On sunny afternoons, many people come to walk through the picturesque gorge of Iški Vintgar. The gorge is famous for its local species of flora (the Carniolan Primrose, Scots Pine) and fauna (the European crayfish). This is the place where the cohabitation of people and nature is perfect.
