Opis

The municipality of Gornji Petrovci is situated in the north-eastern part of Goričko. It has an area of 67 square kilometres and a population of 2,313 inhabitants, living in 712 households. The municipality comprises 14 villages that are symbolized in the municipality emblem as little blue houses with red roofs. The villages are divided into three local communities; Gornji Petrovci, Križevci and Ĺ ulinci. The centre of the municipality is the village of Gornji Petrovci. This is the location of the municipality headquarters, the medical services, the dentist´s office, the pharmacy, the police station, the primary school, which was awarded the title of best-kept school in Slovenia in 2002, a business centre with a bank, the post office, an insurance company, a butchers´, a supermarket, a clothes shop; in short, all the necessary services that are essential for the well-being of the inhabitants. The majority of the population still depends on farming. The most important branch is stockbreeding, especially milk production. However, fruit growing and wine production are becoming increasingly important, too. In spite of its small size, the municipality of Gornji Petrovci has a number of important historical and art monuments, which have been attracting tourists into the region particularly during recent years.

The most important sights are the late Gothic church of the Holy Trinity or “Nedela” in Gornji Petrovci, and the church of St. Anne at Boreča, situated in an idyllic spot, in the midst of pine forests, only two kilometres from the intersection with the Gornji Petrovci – Grad road. There are splendid evangelical churches in Križevci, dating back to 1785, and in Gornji Petrovci, dating back to 1824. At Neradnovci, there is the Lenarčič mill, on the Mala Krka, a stream in a narrow valley, very close to the Hungarian border. The mill was built in 1870 and completely restored in 2000. Next to the mill, a dam has been built on the stream, so there is a small lake now, and next to it a picnic area with a children´s playground. The spot is popular with cyclists who ride along the cycle paths that have been built according to the programme to connect the three neighbouring countries. And there is more to see in the area …
