Opis

The municipality of Gornji Grad is situated in a splendid basin, at the foot of the Savinjske Alps, beneath Menina planina, Lepenatka and Rogatec. The mountains are suitable for one-day walking trips. In about two and a half hours, it is possible to walk from Gornji Grad to Menina planina, which is 1,508 metres above sea level. Gornji Grad abounds with historical and cultural monuments. In 1140, on the territory of the present settlement, monks built a Benedictine monastery – nowadays the only one of its kind in Slovenia. In 1461, the monastery became the property of the Diocese of Ljubljana and was disbanded in 1473. It was then that the Ljubljana bishops chose Gornji Grad as their summer residence. In 1750, Bishop Ernest von Attems had the monastery buildings and the old church pulled down and the present cathedral, which is the largest in Slovenia, built. The impressive cathedral, which is dedicated to Sts Mohor and Fortunat, also has the largest dome of any church in Slovenia. Another attraction are various museum collections, including an ethnological one and a collection of old photographs, presenting the municipality of Gornji Grad. A traditional event is the annual pilgrimage to Nova Ĺ tifta, on the feast day of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, in which pilgrims from all over the country take part. If you visit a tourist farm or a restaurant, you will be warmly accepted and served local dishes. Do not hesitate to come and wander around the places in the unspoilt countryside.
