Opis |
If you are coming from the direction of Ljubljana along the picturesque Krka valley, in Soteska all of a sudden a completely different world opens up in front of you - the Toplice basin with the mysterious Kočevski rog on the right, and elsewhere the low Dolenjska hills, planted with vines and “zidanice” (vineyard cottages). The valley is scattered with small villages, which make for an even friendlier scene. Dolenjske Toplice is situated in the centre of the basin. The town was named after the source of thermal water, which greatly influenced the development of the settlement and its surroundings. The water springs marked the town already in ancient times, which has been proven by archaeological sites in the vicinity of the settlement. Dolenjske Toplice was first mentioned in written records in 1228, when Henry IV, the border count of Istria granted part of his property to the Cistercian monastery in Stična. In 1385, the Counts of Auersperg from Turjak, who owned Toplice, followed the example of some of the contemporary medieval spas and made the popular bathing place in Toplice into a superior complex of hot and mud baths. The place also played an important role between the two world wars. After the Second World War, Toplice began to develop into a spa and rehabilitation centre, especially after 1974, when the spa was taken over by the pharmaceutical company Krka from Novo Mesto. |
