Opis

čŒrna na Koroškem is a picturesque village located at the intersection of three valleys, with the River Meža on the right, the Javor stream on the left and at the meeting point of two roads – the left one leading to Ĺ oštanj and the right one to Kopriva. According to the Austrian art historical topography, čŒrna is first mentioned in historical records in 1137. The first written records of ironworks, when the ironworker and miner Melhior Puc from the Labot valley settled in čŒrna, date back to 1620. The Meža valley has for several centuries been marked by its lead mines and ironworks. Mining is no longer practised but visitors can rediscover it by visiting the tourist mine and the museum “Podzemlje Pece” – “The Peca Underground” in nearby Mežica, where they can take a ride on the mine train along the old mine trails. In the centre of the village, there is a permanent ethnological collection, which reminds visitors of where and how people lived and worked in the past. The town has a long-standing sports tradition, especially winter sports. There is the ski club in čŒrna, which has produced well-known names such as Mitja Kunc, Katjuša Pušnik, Ožbi Ošlak, and today Tina Maze, Aleš Gorza and Nataša Lačen. Near the village there is a cross-country skiing track; it is also possible to go ice climbing. The region is known for its simple, but good-natured people with their characteristic dialect and the specialities of the local cuisine, like buckwheat bread, “mavželjni”, “bula”, “grumpi”, “klocavi nudlni”, “ajdovi žganci”, “hrenov zos”, “koroški mošt” and “črničevc”.
