Opis

The municipality of Cerkvenjak is situated in the heart of the Slovenske gorice, the hilly region between the rivers Pesnica and Ĺ čavnica. It consists of 15 villages, with central Cerkvenjak standing out. It has extremely good traffic connections, so Lenart, Ptuj, Ljutomer and Gornja Radgona are easily reached from here. It has a population of 2,142 inhabitants and covers an area of 24.5 square kilometres. Cerkvenjak is the administrative, economic, educational and cultural centre of the wider region. It got its name from the church (church=cerkev), which already existed at the end of the 13th century. The municipality was founded on 22nd November 1998, when the south-western part of the former municipality of Lenart was divided into four new municipalities. With the creation of this new municipality, the previous historical development from political and territorial division was taken into consideration. Although the creation of municipalities and later parishes took place a long time ago, traces of former administrative divisions have been preserved to the present day; this has also resulted in the foundation of the municipality of Cerkvenjak.
