Opis |
Brezovica is the central municipality of Ljubljansko barje – the Ljubljana Marshes. In the east, it borders the urban municipality of Ljubljana, and the municipalities of Ig and Velike Lašče. In the south lies the municipality of Cerknica, in the west the municipalities of Borovnica and Vrhnika, and in the north Dobrova–Polhov Gradec and Log–Dragomer. Due to its natural and cultural heritage, the area is like a miniature version of Slovenia. Its 30 square kilometres consist of marshes with individual hills sticking out, a siphon-shaped karst lake at Jezero, as well as the Rakitna plateau with its healing climate and the lake. Sixty square kilometres of the area is covered by karst forests. The municipality was founded in 1994. The territory was already populated in prehistoric times. The writer Janez Jalen wrote a story in which he describes in detail the period when the Ljubljana Marshes were still a lake where lake dwellers used to live. It is also possible to see many remains from Celtic and Roman times. The River Ljubljanica had such an important role in terms of transport that the Romans moved its riverbed closer to Podpeč, which is also known for its quality stone. The proximity of the forests and the city favourably influenced the development of agriculture, trade and business. Carts were replaced by trucks. Many old trades, e.g. lime burning, wood and stone processing, and basket-making, have been preserved to the present day. Many of these are successfully practised and help to enrich the local tourist trade. The Ljubljana Marshes regional park, which will be friendly to people and the environment, is currently being prepared. |
