DUTIES AND GOALS OF THE ASSOCIATION OF MUNICIPALITIES OF SLOVENIA

  • TO DEFEND AND SUPPORT the interests of local communities vs. the bodies of the state.
  • FUNCTIONS AS AN INFORMATION SERVICE (informs the media on current issues concerning local autonomy; to raise awareness of the general public on the importance of local autonomy).
  • MAKES SUGGESTIONS AND OUTLINES SOLUTIONS in the field of local autonomy (legislation, financing, administration and reorganization) and passes them on to the bodies of the state
  • COOPERATES AND LINKS with other similar organizations, institutions and associations, in the state and abroad (The Council of Europe’s Congress of Local and Regional Authorities).
  • IT ACTS IN FAVOUR OF:
    • strengthening local democracy and local autonomy in Slovenia,
    • consistent adherence to the European Document on Local Autonomy and the European Document on Regional Autonomy in Slovenia (principle of subsidiarity),
    • legal and financial autonomy of the Association,
    • public administration which is close to the people,
    • balanced and permanent development of municipalities and regions,
    • preservation of the countryside,
    • restoration of industrial and urban centres,
    • closer cooperation of local communities with the state and foreign parties.
    • improvement in the quality of life, both in the countryside and in the industrial and urban areas,
    • decentralization of public administration.
  • OFFERS AND ORGANIZES:
    • expert support to local communities in the process of conforming to the legal order of the European Union,
    • seminars, workshops, consultations, working meetings with regard to claims and needs of local communities,
    • training courses for the personnel of public administration and public enterprises (filling up shortage of staff),
    • other particular projects whose goals include updating and professionalization of the employees in the administration of the municipality and public enterprises.
